September Joint Project Between SOAR & NHS
We held a Healthy Lungs for Life – “Breathe Better, Move More” community event on Tuesday 22nd September, bringing together around 80 local people to learn more about lung health, breathing, physical activity and wellbeing. The event provided a range of information, activities and practical support, including breathing and singing exercises, smoking cessation support, pulmonary rehabilitation discussions, and breathing assessments with spirometry testing from a GP.
Key outcomes / highlights
Around 80 local people attended, demonstrating strong community interest in lung health and wellbeing.
One World Choir provided music and singing, helping create a welcoming and engaging atmosphere.
Creative Health and Music staff from the University of Sheffield supported the event with discussions of the work they have been doing in Sheffield.
Smoking cessation support was available to help people access advice and support to improve their lung health.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation information and support was available for local people living with respiratory conditions.
Weston Park Cancer Charity attended and provided information and support to those with queries related to their own health and the health of their loved ones.
Local GP, Shamanthi Jayasooriya, provided breathing assessments and spirometry testing, giving local residents the opportunity to have their lung function checked and receive appropriate advice.
Helen Lyle, Breathing for Lung Health Practitioner, delivered breathing and singing exercises, giving participants practical techniques they could use to support their every day breathing and lung health.
Participants were able to enjoy a free lunch provided by local Calvary Caterers, helping to make the event welcoming and accessible for the community.
