Our Social Cafes here at SOAR are designed to offer local people time to get together, meet others, chat and play games in a safe and welcoming space. We run fortnightly groups in Parson Cross (The Learning Zone) and Shiregreen (Shiregreen Community Centre), and they're always open to new visitors. Have a read of this blog to hear the support that is offered within and outside the groups:
Brenda has been attending our Parson Cross social cafe for a few years now, originally referred by her GP for social activities to reduce loneliness and isolation. As a regular attendee, she is a familiar face at the groups and is now friendly with other members outside of the group sessions too.

Brenda recently had a fall whilst crossing the road, which sadly led to hospitalisation and a period of reduced mobility. Helen, who runs the groups, kept in touch with Brenda through regular wellbeing calls to check in with her, as the accident led to a loss of confidence and decreased independence, and social withdrawal during the recovery phase.
Helen was able to arrange transport to keep attending the social cafe to give her the much needed emotional wellbeing support and encourage social re-engagement. Upon coming back to the group, Brenda reported feeling very welcome and supported by staff, volunteers and other group members. The positive and inclusive atmosphere helped her regain confidence and re-established social connections. Brenda took part in conversations and activities, demonstrating improved mood and increased willingness to socialise again!
Wellbeing calls from Helen and attending the group again contributed positively to Brenda's emotional wellbeing during recovery, and supported her gradual return to all the social activities she had attended before the fall. This highlights the importance of social inclusion and community support in recovery following physical injury.
"I am truly grateful for the support of Helen and the group members."
