Let’s Build Health Grants are available to help create opportunities and develop local activity that improves health and wellbeing. The grants are available in the following People Keeping Well (PKW) Community Partnership areas: Burngreave, Chapelgreen, Firth Park/Shiregreen, Southey Owlerton.
This round we received some fantastic applications and funded a total of 17 local voluntary and community organisations delivering a range of projects! Meet SAGE:
We are SAGE and we currently host 3 groups on our large allotment plot at Grimesthorpe. We offer places to people with a wide range of mental health issues who are over 18. We aim to support people who will respond well to non-traditional approaches to mental well-being. Spending time in nature and engaging with creative activities have proven mental and physical health benefits, and we have a large allotment plot with a heated cabin for year-round activities.
Tuesday and Thursday group members come along and have opportunities to plan and plant their own piece of garden, work on the larger beds, enjoy the nature-based arts and crafts on offer, or make the most of time away from stressful lives. This is complemented by the sense of mutual support and belonging from being in a supportive group. There are opportunities to make friends and support each other, using their life experience to help others.
Members decide themselves how they spend their time, some come mainly for the support and the conversation. These groups are supported by 2 members of staff and 2 volunteers. Our new Wednesday social is less gardening based and gives the opportunity for members who have attended the other groups to move. Its focus is on social support, there are arts and crafts and games on offer. Members are encouraged to develop friendships and support each other. Activities are designed to prompt conversation and relationship building. This group has 2 support workers and a volunteer helper. All our groups enjoy a cook-and-share lunch with allotment produce when in season with spare produce and recipe cards to take home.
We have a woman-only choir on a Monday lunchtime. Led by an experienced tutor, women come together to sing in harmony and support each other. There is plenty of time for refreshments and friendships to develop, and the choir have a lively WhatsApp group to support each other away from their meetings. The choir sing at fundraisers and community events to promote our work, and are great ambassadors for SAGE.
