SOAR’s Employment Coaches offer information & guidance to local people looking to get into employment, training or volunteering. They'll help you build the tools for self-confidence, self-esteem, goal setting and more. Read on to hear Freshta's story:

Freshta registered with SOAR for employability support in early January 2025. Ambitious to enter the workforce after taking a gap year following the completion of her master's, she needed assistance in securing employment. Her confidence and motivation had both plummeted, however she was eager to engage in meaningful work.
Recognising that Freshta had much to offer potential employers, she faced both prejudice and the additional challenge of being wheelchair-bound with a life-limiting condition, and mobility. Despite these obstacles, she remained determined to find suitable employment. Initially, she aspired to work as a solicitor but was disheartened to learn that specialising in immigration law would require further dedication and time from her.
Focusing on the positives, our initial conversations centred on identifying her job goals and exploring the variety of roles she could pursue with her qualifications. We supported her in job applications and guided potential career routes, including exploring training contracts and volunteering opportunities with law firms.
Freshta was a pleasure to work with - open-minded, receptive to guidance, and persistent in her ambition to succeed. At times, managing expectations was necessary, particularly after her first interview with Citizens Advice Sheffield for a Generalist Advice Worker role, which was unsuccessful. However, she quickly rebounded from this setback and identified a second opportunity with Citizens Advice Service as a Consumer Advisor. With our support in the application process and interview preparation, she was thrilled to secure the role! She is now awaiting the completion of her ‘Access to Work’ arrangements before starting.
Her journey does not stop here - she also plans to apply for a two-year training contract beginning in 2026, further demonstrating her resilience and commitment to her career.
“SOAR has genuinely been a game-changer for me! Their service is not just about getting the job done; it’s about creating a positive experience. Every time I have reached out, the team has been incredibly helpful, taking the time to understand my concerns and providing thoughtful solutions. I’m truly grateful for the support and I can’t thank them enough!"
