Feedback for a Welfare Coach & Link Worker

SOAR's social prescribing offer means that individuals are often supported by multiple members of the team. Our Social Prescribing Link Workers start the conversation and make referrals to other organisations or members of SOAR who can offer the appropriate help and guidance. Our Welfare Coaches offer independent support and advice on a variety of issues, including benefits, finances and family welfare.

Read on to hear from Melanie about the support we offered her as a carer for her elderly mum.

"I have been a carer for my elderly mother for sometime now. The care she requires is increasing and I have been desperately searching for an organisation who could assist me.

I have contacted numerous organisations... waited for hours in phone queues, only to be told they were inundated with enquiries and could not assist me at this time.

I looked online and found a contact via SOAR for Margaret Barker. I contacted Margaret soon after, she was very helpful and informative. I asked her about the possibility of applying for assistance with my mother's care and specifically Attendance Allowance. Margaret explained the process very clearly and how she could help moving forwards. I was referred straight away to Julie Bramall, and I received a call from Julie shortly afterwards.

We arranged an appointment which was within a week, and she volunteered her assistance in my application for my mother's Attendance Allowance.

Julie gave me invaluable advice about the process and how I could help improve my mother's care. After seeking help and advice for so long it was such a relief to be understood and offered assistance.

On the day of my appointment with Julie we were early. My child was off at the time and was with me. When we arrived we were asked if we would like to wait with one of the Community Groups. We were given such a warm welcome at SOAR. Nothing was too much trouble. We were offered tea, juice for my son, and toast. How lovely to be made so welcome.

When Julie arrived she showed us to a private room. We were able to talk freely about the issues concerning my mother's healthcare and conditions. Julie gave me lots of advice regarding her safety, care and how to improve her quality of life. Julie helped in all aspects of completing the A/A form. I would have found the process extremely difficult without her assistance.

I have been so impressed by the help and support I have received, your staff are an absolute credit to the community. They are extremely proficient and human in their approach.

Thank you."
